What Do I Do to My Swimming Pool After a Flood?
If you or someone you know has been affected by the record flooding in Texas in the past few years, the feelings of grief and loss can be overwhelming. Then there are the material costs of repair, or in the worst case, moving on. At Backyard Oasis, we want you to know that you are far from alone during the aftermath of tragedy. After ensuring the safety of their families, one of the questions many homeowners are left asking is, “What do I do to my swimming pool after a flood?” Thankfully, there is a solution and you can get your swimming pool back up and running quickly.
Consult an Electrician
If floodwaters have reached your pool, there is a chance that there is damaged electrical circuitry. The first thing to do is to shut off the main power to the pool from the fuse box. Do not try to repair electrical work yourself; this is a job for a professional. Call an electrician to survey and repair any damage before doing anything else.
Drain the Pool
While damage to your house may take precedence over the swimming pool after the flood, it’s important to start the cleanup quickly, because it will be easier and safer the sooner you get started. It is highly advisable to contact a professional pool service to conduct the job, but the next thing that needs to be done is draining the pool completely, including all pumps and piping. Next, replace your filter.
Clean All Surfaces
According to the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, after you finish removing debris, you will need to clean the inner walls, floor, and pool deck entirely with 10% muriatic acid. After this step is complete, go ahead and rinse off all surfaces and sump pump out the rinse water.
Refill and Adjust Pool Water
Congratulations, the hard part is over. Now you can refill your pool with healthy water. Once it is full, add your regular pool chemicals, check chlorine levels and pH of the water. When it’s back within the normal range you can open your pool back up for swimming!
